Great analysis, I must confess I loved this part of the book and pumped my arms in the air as a youth when I first discovered it. Knew you'd like this part. The Matahachi parts were frustrating but his ending is satisfying (and amusing).
Matahachi's failings building to finally reaching a point where he's showing genuine signs of change is very satisfying. Hopefully Takuan can work his magic again.
Well he has help from two others (not counting Akemi) on this front. He does such a good job that by the end he’s doling out wisdom and Musashi says to himself, ‘damn I gotta man up and catch up, Matahachi’s doing good!’ it’s freaking satisfying. Matahachi is the Goat at the end.
thanks for mentioning my comment, friend
You’re very welcome. It provided some much appreciated insight that I was missing, so it only felt right to give credit where it’s due.
