I didn't know you were into FF though I should have known. Personally, I'm always turned off when I see "MMO" for a couple reasons. One, tons of dlc and content locked behind paywalls, two how long before it dies and turns into BF 2015 or Squadrons, and thirdly, if it is versus, you will need to put so much time into it to be good. I will admit, I play tf2 and have played a ton of Siege, and I really enjoyed Overwatch when I played it twice.
I am relatively new to playing the FF franchise. I've played through IX and am playing through VII remake and theaterythm final bar, and have X for when 7 is done. IX was amazing, and so fat VII remake has.
Content wise and whatnot, how long would you say this one is? XIV right? And is it grindy?
Story wise, at least for the most part, I've enjoyed this one more than pretty much every other entry I've played except for VI. And that's saying something, because I've played the first, second, fourth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and tenth entries, plus FF Tactics. The unique thing about 14 is that it borrows elements from the stories of the other games, but it fully repurposes them into a new experience for the greater world of the MMO.
Gameplay wise, if you're not into the MMORPG style of gameplay - fights based around balancing your positional awareness while playing your chosen class' ability rotation, which often requires many hotbars to setup - then 14's not going to do much to please. If you enjoy, or at least don't mind that sort of gameplay, the game's not too grindy at all. The leveling experience is the main story in and of itself, and you generally don't need to do much more than that unless you want to level other jobs along the way. (One thing I love is - you never need alts if you don't want them, one character can take and level every single job in the game.) Even then, it's not especially grindy outside of crafting and gathering. The endgame does have some grind to it, as is always the case in MMORPGs, but outside of a few exceptions it's pretty relaxed if you're not planning to raid or PVP competitively. Generally the biggest grinds are the relic weapons that the base game and each expansion has, which usually require doing various in-game events to gather various resources in order to make the different stages of those weapons. Some of those grinds are pretty easy, some are really hard, and most are fairly time consuming, though the current expansion's is the easiest one since you literally just grind one of the two endgame currencies that you use to buy some of the max level gear. Other than that, the only requirement is to do a particular series of side quests that run across the different expansions, which can easily be done in 3-4 total hours. That one you can build towards just by doing the normal stuff you'd probably be doing anyway, at least where gameplay is concerned.
The upside is that FF has a pretty wide variety of content available, despite what some might claim. (People who say the game has nothing for them to do after a while generally have gotten bored with the one or two specific things they tend to do.) Part of that content variety is run by the community itself, such as roleplaying venues where people will hang out and basically write collaborative stories, or in some cases - cases which I personally find painfully boring - they'll sit in some digital version of a nightclub in-game and listen to Twitch DJ's. That side of things can be a crazy rabbit hole to go down, though, as personal experience attests.
Okay, I might take a look at this. How does the subscription thing work? Do you have to pay a subscription on top of buying the game and Endwalker?
Though I have heard that 8 is pretty bad. I don't know whether it is mechanic wise or story too. 9 was amazing, interesting story, crazy at times, great music, the stretch towards the end where the track "Not Alone" played was one of my favorite video game times that I have played. That track is so good. I believe my uncle said that that one was released right at the end of the console's life, so no one bought it.
I am only on chapter 4 or something of 7 remake, but I am loving it. Interesting story, amazing graphics, great music, and fun combat.
The story in 8 is okay. It's at its best when dealing with the parallel story following the character Laguna. Mechanics wise, it's experimental, and therefore very messy. Still a decent game, but it's seen as an odd duck in the series.
As for 14, the game offers a free trial that covers the base game and the first two expansions in their entirety. Of course there's a few things you won't have access to in the free trial, but it offers hours upon hours of content to play through to see if it's something you actually enjoy. Do note, the early game does show its age and can drag a little bit in the story, but it's still quite well done. After that point the base game and any additional expansions - if you were to go now that would be Shadowbringers and Endwalker - would need to be purchased and you'd need a subscription. However, where most sub based MMOs have one sub option and that's it, 14 offers either a full subscription at $15/mo or you can do a service account which shaves either $3 or $5 off of that, (I don't recall exactly how much cheaper it is) with the caveat that you're more limited on the number of characters you can make on that single account. If nothing else, it's worth trying with the free trial to see if it is something you'd enjoy enough to purchase in full.

Okay thanks, I'll probably check that at some point, might not be for a while though, what with all the games I have to play and whatnot. Thanks.
